
SAT Prep Seminar
(Recommended age 15 & older)
The SAT is used by most colleges to make admission decisions and is designed to measure math, verbal, and critical thinking skills. This program covers test-taking strategies to handle, the essay sentence completion, critical reading, grammar, arithmetic, algebra and geometry questions. Other topics covered include guessing strategies, process of elimination, pacing, and how to gain points by thinking like the test-makers. Participants will build confidence, reduce test anxiety, and increase their vocabulary. Materials included are the Ivy West SAT Course Book, practice homework problems, priority word list, SAT word groups, practice SATs and diagnostic score reports. This program is consistent with the recommendations for SAT preparation offered by The College Board (the organization that administers the SAT). The SAT is next scheduled on October 4and November 1 at local high schools.

Memory Power & Study Skills
(Ages 9-17)
Visualize your child with tremendous learning and study skills. Imagine your child increasing his or her memory ten times, reading pages in seconds, reducing study time, and easily getting all A's in school. Kids will learn a simple and fun method which will help them accelerate learning and reduce study time. Participants will learn techniques to help them remember what they read, see, and hear; improve math, spelling and note-taking skills; and increase concentration. An optional $7 material fee for a CD is payable at the workshop.

Let's Spell It Right!
(Ages 8-14)
There are four simple steps to becoming an excellent speller. Youngsters learn to apply these steps so that they can spell any word at any time. During this workshop, fun pretests and posttests are given to show kids how they can dramatically improve their spelling skills. Being a dynamite speller will boost your child's confidence and self-esteem and lay the foundation for further success in school. Children with dyslexic problems are encouraged to attend.

Zoo Keeper Camp
(Ages 7-11)
Transformed into Junior Zoo Keepers, campers will gain firsthand knowledge of how the zoo takes care of its many exotic animals. Enjoy “hands-on” science labs covering animal science and wildlife conservation as well as the basic principles of animal care, training and husbandry. Activities also include crafts, games and more. On Thursday we will take a field trip to the Los Angeles Zoo. Family and friends are invited on Friday at 11:30 a.m. to the graduation ceremony at the Santa Ana Zoo. Fee includes daily round-trip, chaperoned bus transportation from the college to the zoo, t-shirt, field trip, and lab materials. Bring sack lunch and drink each day. Preregistration is required, and early enrollment is strongly advised as space is limited.

Cartooning
(Ages 8-14)
Participants will learn basic cartoon drawing and how drawing facial expressions and body language communicates the story line. Human, animal, and object characters will be studied. All work will be done on paper with pencil and felt tip pens. Each participant should bring typing paper, a pencil and a fine point, felt-tip pen to the first session. Fee includes handouts.

Magic for Kids

Magic is fun! Learn the basics in this three-meeting workshop. Magic tricks in cards, coins, and rope will be demonstrated and taught. Bring to the first meeting a new deck of Bicycle brand cards, one 50-cent coin, and $15 for materials.

Beginning Drums
(Ages 9-16)
Preteens through teens can learn to play the drums! The basics of drumming and preparation for being in a band will be taught in four experiential workshops. Included are lessons in playing rudiments, drum beats, and solos. Last workshop is a live performance for parents and friends. Please bring to the first session a pair of drumsticks and a drum pad.

Outlining, Grammar & Composition
(Grades 4-6)
Participants will review grammar and language skills and learn techniques to write through systematic outlining and note taking. Topics include: spelling review, sentence and paragraph construction, with an emphasis on spelling and using the right word or phrase. Listening exercises, brainstorming, and troubleshooting will involve participants in the intuitive and creative process of writing. Participants will dissect short stories to illustrate outlining benefits. Bring a three-ring notebook, pencil, and dictionary/thesaurus to class.

Reading Skills Programs
(4-Year Olds through Entering 11th Graders)
Help your child develop the reading skills needed to succeed in school and build confidence. A successful series of enrichment reading skills programs for children will be held this summer. In these programs your son or daughter will master basic phonics skills, develop fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, and reading speed. These programs also focus on developing the desire to read for pleasure. There will be a $29 to $34 materials fee.
